Wuzhen Location: in the northern part of Tongxiang City
Wuzhen Area: 32.8 square kilometers
Originally called as Wu Dun or Qing Dun, Wuzhen is ranked as the Top 4 "Water Towns" in China, with its time-honored history tracing back to 6000 years ago. It is a typical water town in the south of the Yangtze River, which is honored as "a land flowing with milk and honey as well as the home of silk in China". A river running through the whole town for centuries and a great number of quaint-sytled houses along the river built by the locals have formed the unique Wuzhen fascinating natural scenery. Wuzhen Shopping
Wuzhen has formed a relatively complete commercial network with Zhongshi to be its commercial center. Plenty of local specialties can be found here like Gu-Sao pastry, Hang Zhou chrysanthemum flower extract, San Zhen Zhai marinated duck, Wuzhen mutton etc., among which the former two are the most well-known ones. Shopping in Wuzhen is a really good experience as you can not only get some local special products but also know more about the local cultures and customs.
The price of scenic spots
East Gate Scenic spot:
a) ticket price: 100 yuan/ per person; b) tour guide charges: 80 yuan; c) cruise ships: 80 yuan/ per ship(single trip) for 8 people
West Gate Scenic spot:
a) ticket price: 120 yuan/ per person; b) Price for Evening tour: 40 yuan/ per person(March to August: 6 p.m.---11 p.m.; September to February; 5 p.m.---10 p.m.) b) Ferryboat: free
Wuzhen is quite accessible by convenient daily buses running from neighboring cities such as Shanghai, Jiaxing, Hangzhou, Suzhou etc. While within the tourist spot, a typical local transportation facility-pedicab will be provided for travelers so as to let them experience something traditional, something Chinese.
From Shanghai: a) On Saturdays and Sundays and during the festival times: at Hongkou Football Field 8 a.m., Shanghai Stadium 7:50 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., direct buses are offered with 100 yuan/ per person(return at 4:30 p.m. from Wuzhen) involving a round-trip ticket and admissions to the sightseeing spot. b) At Shanghai Long-distance Bus Station on the Hutai Road, a dialy bus starts at 12:35 p.m. to Wuzhen with the price to be 25.1 yuan.
From Jiaxing: a) At Jiaxing Long-distance Bus Station, direct buses to Wuzhen sets off at 7:20 a.m., 9:50 a.m., 1:40 p.m., 2:10 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.; b) Other times, travelers can take bus firstly to Tongxiang(from 6:30 a.m.---5:30 p.m. at an interval of 5 minutes, and reach the destination within 35 minutes, 5.7 yuan/ per person). And then shift to Wuzhen by mini buses(from 6 a.m.---5 p.m. at an interval of 7 minutes, and reach the destination by 20 minutes, 4 yuan/ per person).
From Hangzhou: a) At Hangzhou East Long-distance Bus Station, dialy buses from 6:30 a.m.---5:30 p.m. are provided at an interval of half an hour and reach Tongxiang by one hour. Price: 15-17 yuan/ per person. Then travelers can take mini buses to Wuzhen. b) Direct Express Buses are also available at a price of 20 yuan.
The pedicabs in the town: Starting(minimum) fare: 3RMB. It will cost you 15 yuan if you want to stroll around all the main attractions in the town by pedicabs.
Best visiting time:
The climate of Wuzhen is similar to Jiaxing and Xitang. And the best seasons in the town are Spring and Autumn, neither cold nor hot. Do avoid going there in Summer as the grilling sunlight will make you feel terrible. While the best time in a day is early morning and the late afternoon, because in the early morning, the thin mist on the river surface can create a mysterious atmosphere, having people feel just like in a night dream. In the late afternoon, travelers can enjoy the typical Southern Chinese river-side scenery featured by small bridges, murmuring streams and elegant dwellings.
